Hello Everyone, We have had such a busy first week of October! We kicked off our first Writing unit on folktales. Students will be writing variations of popular folktales or fairy tales in the next few weeks. To help prepare for this, we have spent time during Literacy reading different versions of the classic tale of Little Red Riding Hood. While reading, students identified elements of a folktale such as setting, evil characters, character's wish, repetition and overall lesson. In both versions of the tale that we have read so far, students noticed that while some elements had changed, you could still tell they were based on the original tale. In Math, students had an opportunity to show what they have learned about multiplication on a short quiz. They continued to practice solving multiplication story problems and explore multiples or number 7-9. They also had a chance to practice their facts by playing multiplication top-it. In Social Studies, we learned about chronological order. We used our birthdays to put ourselves in a human timeline. Eventually, students will get to create timelines of their own personal history in a fun take home project. *More information to come* Students really enjoyed their time at the Arboretum on Wednesday's field trip! Guides led us through the grounds and helped us to learn more about different types of trees. Here are some pictures from the day! Today we had our first Creative Arts and Sciences program! We enjoyed a visit from Eric Olson, also known as "the tree guy" He taught the whole third grade about what trees need to survive and how biologists study trees. He even showed us how a biologist climbs a tree to get a closer look at it! He then visited our classroom, and students got to take a closer look at specimens such as fungi and salamanders.
Don't forget that they will be bringing home their Friday journals and will probably do a much better job of explaining the week's events to you than I did! Please write back to them if you have the time (they love it!) Have a wonderful three day weekend, everyone! ~ Ms. Norris
