Hi Room 29 Families, We have been busy in Room 29! You may have heard about what we are learning from your third grader or through reading our Friday journals! Here is a little bit about what's been going on in third grade! In Literacy, we spent time learning about folktales and read three versions of the popular folktale: Little Red Riding Hood. We read: Little Red Riding Hood, Little Red Cowboy Hat and Pretty Salma. We discussed some common elements of a folktale such as: setting, good characters, evil characters, heart's desire, warnings, magic, lessons and tracked which elements were similar and different in the three variations of the same folktale. This will help us when we begin writing our own folktale adaptations next week! We began doing readers theater with some classic folktales! Here are the students practicing their lines in their groups: In Math we continued our exploration of multiplication! We have practiced solving and creating multiplication word problems. Students have also practiced various multiplication strategies (skip counting, repeated addition, drawing pictures) and are beginning to identify good fit strategies for them. In Writing, we did some quick writes! These 3 minute long writing assignments are a good way to build student's writing stamina! We also practiced logging into our google doc accounts! Last but certainly not least...we had our field trip to the arboretum on Wednesday! Thank you to our chaperones would helped out :) Students explored the deciduous and evergreen trees in the arboretum and collected samples from their surroundings. They also tried to find specific trees based on clues their guides gave them. Here is a group picture from our trip! I hope you have a wonderful three day weekend!
~Ms. Norris Happy Friday Everyone! In addition to emails, this blog will be a great place to learn about all of the fun things we are doing in third grade throughout the year. I will always email you to let you know when there is a new blog post up! This week was very HOT and busy in third grade! We spent a lot of time getting to know each other through sharing our artifact bags and activities such as d'icebreakers and Numbers that Mean Something to Me. We also learned about the routines and expectations in Room 29 and at Franklin school. In third grade, we spend a lot of time working in groups- so we practiced working together through completing the PAPER CHAIN CHALLENGE. Students had to work together to try to build the longest paper chain possible when given one piece of construction paper in 30 minutes (5 min. to plan, 25 to work) Speaking of working together... we each decorated one piece of paper and learned that they fit together as puzzle pieces to make one big quote: "Individually, we are one drop. Together, we are an ocean." (Students are holding the puzzle in the picture at the top of this post). We discussed what this meant and how it applied to our classroom and third grade. We also read Swimmy by Leo Lionni and were able to make connections between the text and the quote.
Overall, it was such a wonderful first week! I am SO looking to the rest of our year together! Have a fantastic long weekend! ~MS. NORRIS Hello Room 29 Families, Today was our first day of third grade! We spent the day getting to know each other and our classroom. We also tried our best to stay cool in the 90 degree heat! Below are some pictures from our first day photo shoot- click through the pictures at the bottom to see all the third graders! I am already looking forward to the rest of the week getting to know this awesome group of students! If only it would cool down a little...
~Ms. Norris Hello Room 29 Families, On Wednesday, we participated in our first Understanding Our Differences program! This was the first of two UOD programs that we have in third grade. Wednesday's program focused on learning about people who are deaf or hard of hearing. With the help of parent volunteers, students had the opportunity to engage in small group activities as well as hear a guest speaker discuss his experiences growing up deaf. Students were introduced to the different parts of the ear, some causes of deafness or hearing loss and different forms of communication. In small groups, students learned how to sign the alphabet, practice lip reading and explore tools that people use in their daily lives. Check out some photos from the program: Hello Everyone, Happy Friday! It has been another busy week here in Room 29! In Literacy, we spent the week practicing our reader's theater folktale performances. In doing so, students practiced working cooperatively with their groups to put on the best performance possible! They also practiced reading their lines fluently and clearly. They were excited to perform their folktales for their classmates! We performed Little Red Hen, Hansel and Gretel, Goldilocks and the Three Bears and Jack and the Beanstalk. Here are some pictures of their performance: In Math, we continued our work with arrays and began to explore the idea of area. Students used square inch tiles to find the area of different sized rectangles. In doing this, they were able to connect their work with multiplication and arrays to finding area. We also spent some time practicing our multiplication facts. We discussed using different strategies to help with facts we don't know fluently yet (within 3-5 seconds). One helpful strategy is to start with a known/friendly fact and use it to help you solve the unknown fact.
In Writing, we were able to apply all of our knowledge on the elements of folktales to draft our first folktale adaptation! Students are working in groups to adapt the classic tale of Three Billy-Goats Gruff. They are turning out to be quite creative! Eventually, students will draft an adaptation of a folktale of their choosing independently. In Social Studies, we continued our work with chronological order and created timelines of our weekend. In Science, students learned how to differentiate between living and non-living things. Conferences start next week, so you will all have the chance to see some of the work your third graders have been completing! I hope you all have a wonderful weekend :) ~ Ms. Norris Hello Everyone, We have had such a busy first week of October! We kicked off our first Writing unit on folktales. Students will be writing variations of popular folktales or fairy tales in the next few weeks. To help prepare for this, we have spent time during Literacy reading different versions of the classic tale of Little Red Riding Hood. While reading, students identified elements of a folktale such as setting, evil characters, character's wish, repetition and overall lesson. In both versions of the tale that we have read so far, students noticed that while some elements had changed, you could still tell they were based on the original tale. In Math, students had an opportunity to show what they have learned about multiplication on a short quiz. They continued to practice solving multiplication story problems and explore multiples or number 7-9. They also had a chance to practice their facts by playing multiplication top-it. In Social Studies, we learned about chronological order. We used our birthdays to put ourselves in a human timeline. Eventually, students will get to create timelines of their own personal history in a fun take home project. *More information to come* Students really enjoyed their time at the Arboretum on Wednesday's field trip! Guides led us through the grounds and helped us to learn more about different types of trees. Here are some pictures from the day! Today we had our first Creative Arts and Sciences program! We enjoyed a visit from Eric Olson, also known as "the tree guy" He taught the whole third grade about what trees need to survive and how biologists study trees. He even showed us how a biologist climbs a tree to get a closer look at it! He then visited our classroom, and students got to take a closer look at specimens such as fungi and salamanders.
Don't forget that they will be bringing home their Friday journals and will probably do a much better job of explaining the week's events to you than I did! Please write back to them if you have the time (they love it!) Have a wonderful three day weekend, everyone! ~ Ms. Norris Hello Room 29 Families, Happy Friday! We had a busy week here in Room 29- here is a little bit about what we were up to... We continued to build our classroom community through getting to know each other and our classroom routines and expectations. We also spent some time thinking about our Franklin school rules and students had a chance to dig deeper through an academic choice project. Students demonstrated what they know about a particular rule through creating a circle map, advertisement or skit. We encouraged students to consider their learning style when choosing their project. We also kicked off Math this week! We began our first day with an introduction to multiplication. Students were eager to learn this new operation and have been excited to practice it all week. To lay the foundation for this new math skill, we have spent time thinking about things that come in equal groups. With these items in mind, students had a chance to create multiplication illustrations. We also spent time reviewing place value this week, and will continue to do so throughout this unit. In Reading, we opened our classroom library! We discussed choosing just right books using the IPICK strategy. We have also spent time building our independent reading stamina. We have made it to 25 minutes! Overall, we had a great week together and I am so looking forward to the rest of third grade!
Have a wonderful weekend everyone! ~ Ms. Norris Yesterday was our first day of third grade and it was a success! Students were very excited to get to know each other and our classroom. We spent time starting to build our classroom community with some icebreakers and familiarized ourselves with some important classroom and school routines. Check out some first day photos of your third graders: ~ Ms. Norris
